The COVID-19 pandemic is putting many businesses in our industry at risk. This impact is clearly reflected in the numbers of trade shows postponements and cancellations. Due to the coronavirus outbreak also the world’s biggest trade exhibitions are being cancelled. It is just of few weeks ago the official announcement of the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Japan and the same is happening with Dubai’s Expo 2020 that could be delayed by a year. Others are trying to cope with this critical situation, it is the case, for example of the Shanghai Fashion Week that was probably the first fashion week to be held entirely digitally. Initially cancelled due to the coronavirus spread across China, the event took place on Tmall, the online marketplace of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, demonstrated how Alibaba’s livestream-shopping works. For sure, the coronavirus will also bring a lasting change to the industry as forward-thinking organisers accelerate their embrace of digitalization.

In the current scenario, also the Eumabois network sees some of its exhibitions been postponed or even cancelled. For example, the Holz-Handwerk in Nuremberg was in the first step postponed to June 2020 and finally cancelled for the 2020 edition. Jürgen Köppel, Eumabois President: I very much regret that the Holz-Handwerk has been cancelled for 2020, but this is the right decision under the given conditions. For me, this fair is always a very intense experience, which is why I always like to go to Nuremberg.” Also the 2020 Italian event Xylexpo will not be held next May as originally planned, but postponed to 10-13 November, 2020. Luigi De Vito, Eumabois Vice-President: We have not made the decision to postpone the Xylexpo easy, but under the impression of the current circumstances it is the absolutely right approach. Let us hope that these dates will support both the fair and the economic environment.” The same applies for Formobile 2020 in Brazil. The organizers decided to postpone the trade fair and the new date of the event will be announced as soon as available.

Trade fairs generally play an important role, especially in times of crisis or economic recovery and they are vital to support industries in challenging times. We remain confident and positive that this crisis will end soon and the trade fair industry will get back to its success role with much more challenges and opportunities.
